 Guru Rinpoche, also known as Padmasambhava, is the founder of Tibetan Buddhism and the root guru of the Nyingma school (Red Hat school). He is revered as the "Second Buddha" and is considered an emanation of Amitabha, Avalokiteshvara, and Shakyamuni Buddha, encompassing the three secrets of body, speech, and mind. Around the 8th century AD, at the invitation of King Trisong Detsen, he traveled from India to Tibet to propagate Buddhism, establishing Samye Monastery—the first monastery in Tibet—laying the foundation of Tibetan Buddhism and spreading Tantric Buddhism throughout the region. His deeds are filled with miraculous powers and have had a profound influence on Himalayan Buddhism.

 

Main Aspects and Deeds: **Extraordinary Incarnation:** Guru Rinpoche was born from a lotus flower in the Dharagawa Sea near Uddiyana (present-day Swat), India, hence his name.

 

**Founder of Tibetan Buddhism:** At the invitation of Shantarakshita and King Trisong Detsen, Shakyamuni Buddha entered Tibet, subdued the evil spirits of Bon, established Samye Monastery, and propagated both exoteric and esoteric Buddhism. Founder of Terma (Hidden Treasures): To preserve profound teachings, scriptures, ritual implements, and other items were buried as Terma, to be discovered by future disciples. The *Tibetan Book of the Dead* is one such famous Terma.

 

Founder of the Nyingma School: He was one of the most accomplished masters of the Nyingma school, renowned for his Dzogchen teachings.

 

Multiple Incarnations: He possessed eight widely known incarnations, subduing demons and benefiting sentient beings.

 

Buddha's Prophecy: Shakyamuni Buddha prophesied his coming to earth, therefore he is considered the "Second Buddha."

Deity, Guru, Protector: In practice, he can act as a deity, guru, and protector.

 

Revered: He is revered by the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism and is known as "Padmasambhava" (the Venerable Guru).

 

Extraordinary Blessings: He was united with Padmasambhava, receiving immeasurable blessings, eliminating obstacles, and accumulating merit. Relationship with Guru Padmasambhava (Lu Shengyan): Guru Padmasambhava was the root guru of Guru Padmasambhava and received his direct lineage. During meditation, he was bestowed the title "Red Crown Vajra Crown Secret Master" by Guru Padmasambhava and received the Dzogchen teachings.

 

In short, Guru Padmasambhava is the greatest and most revered master in the history of Tibetan Buddhism. His merits and teachings continue to spread widely, benefiting countless beings.
